COCADA-MAKING VIRTUAL WORKSHOP

TBD

Join us and learn how to make traditional cocadas of San Basilio de Palenque, Colombia.
These delicious coconut candies emerge from a long history of resistance and perseverance. Maria, a palenquera, will lead us on this culinary journey to explore the history of cocadas and the role AfroColombian women play in maintaining the tradition. Maria has traveled to different countries selling her treats and has garnered much fame. From Cartagena, Colombia, she invites us into her family’s home to share a part of herself with us. There are no scientific measurements in this culinary experience! We will learn by doing!

DOLL-MAKING WORKSHOP WITH MAMA ARI

TBD

Power. That’s the best way to describe Muñecas Negras con Mamá Ari. In our Afro Experience you will make Abayomi dolls, a West African doll tradition that has been around for centuries. Mama Ari, the community “mama guarda” or keeper of Congos de Colón, Panama history, culture and practice leads this workshop. She walks us through their significance and how Black mothers filled these dolls with spiritual protections. You will fill each knot with positive affirmations and intentions.

-SUENAN LOS CAJÓNES - AFROPERUVIAN CAJÓN WORKSHOP

TBD

Join AfroLatinx Travel as artivist Nani Medrano leads this cajón workshop.
Nani combines her music and dance with her activism. Medrano uses the AfroPeruvian cajon, which she says connects her to her motherland and her ancestry. Sharing the histories, her family lineage and her personal stories through these mediums is not a trend, it is a lifestyle, she said.

TESTIMONIALS

My trip with AfroLatino Travel was a life-changing experience. Period. And I don't use those words lightly. No other group out there will give you access to both the important historical and modern sights and scenes around Cuba - but also authentically connect you to the lived experiences of AfroCubans today.
